Oslo, Norway: Installing the “electronic pattern parasite”

From the 14.-17. of September 2010 we installed the 15 parasitic organisms on wall #4 at the IFI2 building of the University of Oslo.

We saw the building the first time, after we planned and produced the project with sketches of the building for 3 years. The architects of IFI2 combined cool and warm materials (metal, glas, oak and bricks) and merged architecture and nature. The building is integrated in a very small gap between older buildings of the campus.
We also saw the pattern in the wall structure the first time, since it was produced with our instructions by a special company in March 2010. Some leveling and cleaning of the vylene was necessary. Finally the mounting of the circuit boards was done with the help of specialists and a mobile stage. We had to wear helmets, working shoes and some plastic slippers to enter the building, which is still under construction.

Here comes the sun in Berlin and Dortmund

A collective of elfs conquer museums in Berlin and Dortmund.

A collective of elfs – trapped in jars – is displayed in the context of the exhibition “Here Comes The Sun” this summer in Berlin and Dortmund. The exhibition explains the nature of the sun with various interactive installations suitable for visitors from 7 years on. This group of elfs was found and collected in a rough and rocky environment. For scientific reasons they are displayed in traditional jars to allow kids to understand their autonomic and light dependent nature. Visitors can activate them with flashlights and observe their movements for 3 months during the summer 2010. After that the group will be released – hopefully without being harmed by the young ‘thirsty-for-knowledge’ researcher group.
The exhibition “Here Comes The Sun” invites children to explore the power of the sun. Interactive installations, movies, animations and experiments demonstrate the importance of the sun and shows how we already use it in every day life. The exhibition is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is a cooperation project of the Humboldt University Berlin and Neues Universum Berlin e.V.

“What is life? Scientists argue all the time over this big question. Nevertheless, there’s general agreement that to qualify there should be signs of growth, reproduction, adaption, responsiveness, metabolism, and movement. Sometimes autonomy, development and evolution get pitched into the equation too.

Pascal & Martina’s ELFs (electronic-lifeforms) are small analog electronic creatures that react to light. And with all their twittering and tweeting, pulsating and throbbing it’s really hard to not believe that they are living some kind of life.”
